At the Party Conference in October it was announced that Zac Goldsmith MP had been elected by over 70% of voters in an open primary to be the Party’s candidate for Mayor of London to replace Boris Johnson when his second term of office ends in May 2016.
The duty of the Mayor is to make London a better place for everyone who lives in, works in or visits the city. He does this by setting an overall vision for London and creating plans and policies to achieve it. In financial terms the most important areas of the Mayor’s responsibility are transport (TfL), policing, and the fire service. However, the Mayor’s office and the London Assembly members also have important roles in areas as diverse as planning, organising events such as the New Year fireworks, helping London to cut harmful emissions so that our environment is improved and helping grassroots sports
Zac was born in 1975 in Richmond, west London, and he has spent much of his life fighting for causes he believes in. In 2010 he was elected MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston. He has been voted Politician of the Year four times by four organisations in recognition of the many high profile campaigns he has led in his constituency. In 2015 he was re-elected for his London seat with one of the biggest increased majorities in the country. Shortly afterwards when Zac balloted his constituents to ask their permission to run for Mayor of London, they overwhelmingly backed him with 79% saying Yes.
He has three strong goals for housing, transport and policing that he wants to concentrate on when he becomes Mayor.
