Although Gallows Corner is not in our Constituency many of us use this roundabout frequently and are aware of its shortcomings. The roundabout is a busy five arm junction linking the A12 Eastern Avenue and A12 Colchester Road with the A127 Southend Arterial Road and A118 Main Road and Straight Road. Above the roundabout is a flyover that runs between the A12 Eastern Avenue and the A127 Southend Arterial Road
Many have voiced concern about the poor road safety record at the junction. Analysis shows that the main causes of vehicle collisions are excessive speed on the approach and entry to the junction, drivers failing to give way whilst on the roundabout, and difficulty whilst changing lane. The proposed improvements intend to slow traffic sooner as it approaches the junction and to help traffic flow more safely as it moves through the roundabout. It is hoped that this will reduce the number of vehicle collisions that take place at the junction.
However, the improvements consist mainly of speed restrictions and changing the painted markings on the road and are, in our opinion, not worth the proposed cost. This intersection needs an underpass not new painted lines.
